About Edward

Edward Abel Smith is a non-fiction author, feature writer, documentary maker and podcaster. His first professionally published book was a unique biography about the James Bond creator, Ian Fleming’s Inspiration (Pen & Sword History, 2020), where the reader was taken on a journey through Fleming’s direct involvement in World War II intelligence and how this translated via his typewriter into the James Bond novels. Coupled with the many other factors of Fleming’s life, which were also taken as inspiration, the book was printed in hardback and later re-released in paperback.

His second book was The British Oskar Schindler: The Life and Work of Nicholas Winton (Pen & Sword History, 2023), which is a biography of one of Britain’s most celebrated humanitarians. The story was the subject to a major motion picture with Anthony Hopkin’s portraying Winton, One Life. He has also written Angels of Prague about a group of women who rescued 15,000 Jewish people from Czechoslovakia after the Nazi invasion in 1939, which is being published by Silvertail Books in June 2025.

Edward has been commissioned by Canelo (a Dorling Kindersley / Penguin Random House company) to write a book about 'The Blackout Ripper' from 1942.

A story Edward has been researching for four years is being made into a Sky documentary. Partnering with Lightbox Entertainment (Searching For Sugarman, Man on Wire, David Holmes: The Boy Who Lived and Sophie: A Murder in West Cork), Edward is one of the producers and the book he is writing on the story is the basis for the documentary. He is also the co-host and co-creator of Lucy Letby: Was There Ever A Crime podcast with veteran investigative journalist John Sweeney, where they question the conviction against Britain’s most notorious serial killer of modern times.

He has written features about his books for The Daily Express, The Telegraph and The Mail on Sunday. His stories have also been regularly quoted in the above publications as well as The Times, The Guardian, The Washington Times and The Sun. He has also appeared on several radio programs including BBC Radio 4, BBC Radio London, LBC, Talk TV and BBC World Service, as well as podcasts A Short History Of… and BBC History Extra

Edward lives near the south coast of England with his wife, two daughters and their dog, Vesper.
